December, 2009: Christmas Concert

The annual Christmas Concert on December 19, 2009, was a great success and the choir and orchestra enjoyed the audience participation.  Under the baton of Musical Director, Mike Cottam, the audience sang verses from operas, clapped to Viennese Polkas and burst paper bags to produce sounds of cannon shot to the l812 Overture. It was a reminder that music is a living entity to be enjoyed in so many ways.

October, 2009: Curtain Up!

It was curtain up in Llangadog Parish Church on Saturday, 17th October, 2009. Under the baton of Michael Cottam, Cantorion and Symphonica Tywi combined to present a lively evening of excerpts from well loved operas to a capacity audience. Joining them was international soprano Maria Lyn who also sang songs from "South Pacific" and "Phantom of the Opera".

An appreciative audience was invited to join the festivities by singing choruses from Nabucco (The Hebrew Slaves - in Italian!) and Carmen (Toreador's Song). They were enthusiastically applauded by the choir and invited as guests to see how the choir rehearses on Sunday, November 1st, in the Community Hall.

At the interval a mother told her 7 year old son they would have to leave as the babysitter was only booked until 9pm. The little boy's eyes filled with tears - "Can I stay until the end?" Mum relented when a kindly member of the audience agreed to keep an eye on the boy. Half an hour later Mum was back.. Dad had come home early and so she could return to join her son in what she called a fantastic evening. "To think all this is on our doorstep and my boy is hooked".

"Curtain Up" was a night of fun and festivities, but with a sad note.  The audience joined the conductor, choir, and orchestra in saying farewell to their much loved Assistant Musical Director, Dr Mark Boulter. After fourteen years of committed service he was now relinquishing the post, but assured the assembled audience that he would join them whenever he was able.
